Funicular of Fribourg

Funicular of Fribourg

Everyone in Fribourg knows the funicular as one of the town's curiosities.

The line was opened in 1899 and links the town centre to the Basse-Ville (the lower area of the town). The Fribourg funicular is a listed historical monument and unique in Europe... it is actually one of the last one to run on waste water from the town, which is used thanks to a system of counterweights.

The creaking and clattering of the rack of the hundred-year old machine is obviously worth seeing, especially as it will take you deep into the soul of the town. The funicular was - and still is - the link between the "Basse-Ville" and the centre of Fribourg. History and modernity... a true symbol!

Mini train rides in the Gottéron Valley

Mini train rides in the Gottéron Valley

Nestled in the Gottéron Valley, it is a quiet scenic spot, which is particularly popular among walkers and families seeking to escape the hustle and bustle of the city.

It really is an eclectic little spot: besides a café and a mini-train track, there is also a cave, which was once used to grow mushrooms but now is home to a restaurant car! There is a real family-friendly atmosphere here. As the adults enjoy a refreshing drink on the café’s terrace in summer or in the restaurant car in winter, kids can hop on the mini-train and ride around to their hearts’ content.

La Motta lido

La Motta lido

When it opened in 1923, La Motta Lido was the first open-air swimming pool in Switzerland.

Originally built as a wash-house for Fribourg’s workers, its two baths were filled with water from the Sarine river. But in 1940, the city’s population successfully appealed to the Federal Court for the baths to be open to everyone. The lido has still retained many of its original features, such as its red tiles and quaint sky-blue cubicles. La Motta also offers spectacular views of St. Nicholas Cathedral.
